Salaam Mr. ,
I was wondering, I would like to fund a freely-downloadable and open-source project. Concerning the rules governing zakaat:
"Zakah expenditures are only for [1] the poor and for [2] the needy and for [3] those employed to collect [zakah] and for [4] bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for [5] freeing captives [or slaves] and for [6] those in debt and for [7] the cause of Allah and for [8] the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.“ Quran [9:60]
It would be possible to find programmers who fall in categories [1], [2], ... [8]. However, since they would work to produce the open-source software, it is not the bounties (=money) that I would give away to the programmers, but the result of the work (=software) to the public.
I would like to modify this plan, until at least some of the payments properly satisfy the requirements of zakaat (=Quran 9:60).
I was thinking of using a payment method similar to:
Not all payments made through such system must necessarily qualify as zakaat, but I would like an important proportion to qualify.
Any idea of how to make a good proportion of the bounties qualify as zakaat?
Kind regards,
